Unleashing Healthcare Ingenuity
23 Apr 2024

Our Clinicians are driving innovation to new heights, showcasing creativity in improving patient care and outcomes.

After three months of intense competition, the Fortis Innovation Challenge 2.0 – Finale for Clinicians held on 11 March concluded with the exciting announcement of the top three winners.

Congratulations to:

Winner: Perineal interstitial brachytherapy (PIB) – Virtual pre-planning to accurate execution by Dr. Vineeta Goel and Dr. Rachna Jain, Fortis Hospital, Shalimar Bagh

Second: The ‘Crash bell’ that saves lives! Paediatric emergency management system by Dr. Krishna S Iyer, Fortis Escorts Hospital, Okhla, New Delhi

Third: An innovative tool to identify AV fistula dysfunction on time by Dr. Himanshu Verma, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram

This year’s challenge, dedicated to clinicians, witnessed a remarkable slew of ideas and solutions from doctors across Fortis Healthcare.

“We saw creativity, originality and inspiring ideas at its best – all towards enhancing patient care and improving outcomes. Best innovations are the ones which are simple, scalable and cost-optimised. It was such an enriching event as we heard it – from Immersive VR experiences that aid education, use of AI in radiology to ingenious methods of identifying narrowing of AV fistulas using simple stethoscope, the range of ideas was truly remarkable,” said Dr Ritu Mittal, Chief Growth and Innovation Officer at Fortis Healthcare.

The winning idea, "Perineal Interstitial Brachytherapy (PIB) – Virtual Pre-Planning for Precision Execution," enables physicians to meticulously plan the brachytherapy procedure using virtual simulations based on patient scans. This innovative approach significantly enhances procedure accuracy, expedites process time, and enhances safety. Moreover, it effectively diminishes complication rates. Importantly, this virtual pre-planning method can be seamlessly integrated using existing resources and easily implemented across various hospitals. To date, seven patients have undergone treatment utilising this virtual pre-planning technique, all experiencing satisfactory brachytherapy procedures devoid of complications.

"The Fortis Innovation Challenge represents an innovative approach, offering a platform for our medical community to showcase their creativity and problem-solving abilities in addressing everyday clinical challenges," shared Dr. Vineeta Goel, Director and Head of the Department for Radiation Oncology at Fortis Hospital, Shalimar Bagh.

Chaired by Dr Ashutosh Raghuvanshi, Managing Director and CEO of Fortis Healthcare, the challenge underscores our clinicians’ dedication to fostering a culture of innovation and pushing boundaries toward clinical excellence.
