IHH Malaysia launched a nationwide Accident and Emergency (A&E) initiative in partnership with general practitioners (GPs) in March 2025, to enhance the delivery of emergency care across the country.
Leveraging its extensive network of hospitals, which includes Gleneagles Hospitals, Island Hospital, Pantai Hospitals, Prince Court Medical Centre, and Timberland Medical Centre, IHH Malaysia is driving stronger coordination between primary care providers and hospital emergency teams to deliver timely, high-quality care while patients transit from clinic to hospital.
Key measures introduced to operationalise this collaboration include timely patient updates for GPs, direct phone access to A&E teams for urgent referrals, structured two-way communication for smoother clinical handovers, and practical upskilling through GP masterclasses and Basic Life Support training.
Jean-François Naa, CEO of IHH Malaysia, said, “Primary care is the foundation of a resilient healthcare system, and GPs are often the first point of contact for patients. Through this collaboration, we are strengthening that vital role – ensuring GPs have direct access, streamlined referral pathways and timely clinical support when patients need hospital care. Our goal is to deliver comprehensive care at every stage of the patient journey, with seamless continuity from clinic to hospital and back.”
Dr Jeewadas Baladas, Consultant Emergency Physician and Head of Emergency Services at IHH Malaysia, added, “From pre-hospital care to A&E admission and beyond, every step in the patient journey is vital. Closer collaboration between GPs and our A&E teams ensures timely, evidence-based care for patients when clinically indicated. Our 18 A&E departments follow a standardised triaging system and clinical pathways, ensuring consistent, high-quality emergency care.”
With more than 130 clinics across Malaysia actively participating in the inaugural events, IHH Malaysia is encouraged by the positive response from the primary care community in supporting its efforts to strengthen emergency response capabilities and improve patient outcomes.
