In a heartwarming moment, Leia Dynnyk, a 15-month-old from Ukraine, experienced a miracle when she heard her mother’s voice for the first time after undergoing cochlear implant surgery at Acıbadem Kent Hospital in İzmir, Türkiye.
Born with severe hearing impairment, Leia's condition was confirmed shortly after birth, leaving her parents, Mariana and Oleksii Dynnyk, in disbelief. Despite using hearing aids, Leia still could not hear, but the advanced cochlear implant has changed things.
On 25 June, Leia underwent the transformative surgery and began to recognise
sounds like a newborn. Her mother, Mariana, expressed immense joy, saying,
"I can't describe how I feel. She finally heard our voices
Professor Dr Mehmet Ziya Özüer, Ear, Nose and Throat specialist, who performed the surgery, explained that the implant bypasses the non-functioning inner ear cells and directly stimulates the brain, enabling hearing. He noted that Leia's language development process will take about a year, during which her parents will play a crucial role as her real teachers.
This milestone not only brought joy to Leia's family but also showcased how our relentless pursuit of clinical excellence has touched lives and transformed care for our patients.
