Keeping A Dream Alive
30 Jun 2021

Fast and precise diagnosis by the Nephrology team at Global Hospital, Parel not only revived 16-year-old Isha Rajguru’s dream of becoming a model after she was bedridden with a rare neurological disorder, it also saved her family from hefty medical bills they could not afford.

At first, Isha experienced numbness in her right hand and right leg. Then it spread to her neck, causing her to be temporarily bedridden. Her parents had to carry her out of bed the next day to rush her to a nearby hospital for treatment. There, she was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare neurological disorder, and prescribed costly immunoglobulin injections.

Unwilling to see Isha’s dreams dashed, the family decided to seek a second opinion from neurology experts Dr Bharat Shah, Director of Nephrology, and Dr Pankaj Agarwal at Global Hospital, Parel. After a thorough examination, Dr Bharat discovered that Isha’s condition was caused by potassium leaking from her kidneys and ordered a potassium replacement procedure.

Much to everyone’s delight, Isha was back on her feet after five days under the care of Dr Pankaj and no longer had to rely on the costly injections.

Said Dr Pankaj, “It is not uncommon to see patients who come to us with wrong diagnoses. Some of them have even completed their treatment based on these wrong diagnoses, while others are planning to do so while coming to us to seek another opinion. In such instances, I’m very thankful to be able to intervene and ensure that they get the right medical treatment and advice that they deserve.”
