Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital (MNH) made significant reductions in waste and significant improvements between 2022 and 2024. The hospital’s commitment to sustainable practices has resulted in a 17% reduction (~189 tonnes) in general waste from 2022 to 2023, followed by a further 5% reduction (~50 tonnes) from 2022 to 2024. Biohazard waste also saw a reduction of 21% (~45 tonnes) from 2022 to 2023 and an impressive 28% reduction (~50 tonnes) from 2022 to 2024.
In addition, MNH's recycling efforts have surged, with an increase of 47% (~15 tonnes) in recycled waste from 2022 to 2023, and a 69% increase (~23 tonnes) from 2022 to 2024. This achievement highlights the hospital's dedication to its environmental goals and sustainability agenda.
Mount Elizabeth Hospital (MEH) embarked on a pilot project to manage food waste more sustainably. The trial of a 50kg food waste digestor was conducted over a six-month period, from January 2024 to June 2024. Food waste was loaded into the digestor, where microbes housed in biomedia converted the waste into grey water. This grey water complies with the Public Utilities Board (PUB) Trade Effluent Standards and is subsequently safe to discharge into the wastewater system.
Gleneagles Hospital (GEH) was transformed into fun-filled learning zones to educate, engage, and encourage everyone to take small steps toward a greener future. Staff and visitors learnt about the hospital’s green initiatives and were educated on sustainability through hands-on games and activities.
A Fukugi tree was planted to commemorate the launch of Sustainability Day. Just as the Fukugi tree has sheltered and protected communities in Japan for centuries, GEH Fukugi tree is a testament to GEH’s commitment to sustainability, resilience, and care.
GEH celebrated its very first Earth Hour on 28 November on 2024. All non-essential lights were switched off for 65 minutes! This 65 minutes was a powerful reminder of how the collection of small acts can lead to a big impact for our planet. GEH is committed to making a difference in its daily choices and inspire others to care for the Earth we share.
Parkway Shenton Executive Health Screeners (EHS) used to mail a hardcopy medical report to each patient. Each report consisted of an average of 30-35 sheets of paper, at a load of almost 30,000 EHS per annum, we were using almost 1,000,000 sheets of paper each year on medical reports, equivalent to 2000 reams!
With the implementation of the Parkway Automated Reporting Solution, EHS reports are now digitised, securely emailed to patients, and uploaded seamlessly to MyHealth360 (MH360) platform. EHS have also worked together with Parkway Radiology and Laboratory to halve the number of printed raw results and reports. In total this has resulted in a reduction of almost 1 million sheets of paper per year. Patients can receive their Parkway Radiology diagnostic images on MY360, further eradicating the need to mail any hardcopy reports or CDs of images, resulting in a savings of almost 30,000 CDs, envelopes, and plastic binders a year.
By adopting these digital solutions, we have reduced our environmental footprint while enhancing convenience for our patients.
