The VDO strategy aims to enhance the quality of care and patient satisfaction while concurrently reducing unnecessary costs. By leveraging advanced analytics, we gain insights into patient outcomes, track performance metrics, and benchmark against international best practices, setting new standards in Malaysian healthcare delivery.

Examples include the timeliness of antibiotic administration, the speed of patient recovery following surgical procedures, and the effectiveness of scopes.

What outcomes matter to patients?

There are two defined perspectives:

Clinical Outcome:

This refers to the measurable results of a procedure, treatment, or intervention, typically assessed through medical indicators such as improvement in symptoms and recovery time.

Patient's Perceived State or Feeling:

This encompasses the subjective experience and satisfaction of the patient following the procedure, treatment, or intervention. It includes factors such as pain levels, quality of life, emotional well-being, and overall satisfaction with the care received.

One of the fundamental benchmarks of quality in healthcare is the patient's perception of the care they receive, encompassing aspects such as patient satisfaction and duration taken to return to normal or improved function after discharge from the hospital. These factors can be quantified through Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs), providing valuable insights into the effectiveness and impact of healthcare interventions from the patient's perspective.

VDO strives to deliver high-quality, cost-efficient care that is safe, sustainable, and effective.

Equipped with quality data, clinicians can make precise assessments and decisions regarding patient care, ultimately enhancing the overall patient experience and outcomes. Moreover, patients can be assured of receiving evidence-based care supported by proven treatments and techniques.

Key focus areas:
  • Colonoscopy
  • Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI)
  • Total Knee Replacement (TKR)
  • Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Surgery
  • Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy
  • Hysterectomy
Demonstrable results

The implementation of VDO at IHH Healthcare Malaysia has yielded several significant improvements across various medical procedures and patient care processes:

Colonoscopy

A colonoscopy allows a doctor to visually inspect the entire large bowel, also known as the colon or large intestine, safely and effectively.

Improved patient education on bowel preparation has resulted in cleaner bowels before testing, significantly enhancing the accuracy and effectiveness of colonoscopy procedures with better caecal (first portion of the large intestine) intubation rate and withdrawal time. This data-driven approach ensures each procedure is conducted with precision and efficiency.

Polyp Detection Rate:

Our polyp detection rate is an impressive 50%, surpassing the international benchmark of 40% reported by the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE).

Adenoma Detection Rate:

Our adenoma detection rate stands at 27%, on par with the ESGE benchmark of 25%. This highlights our effectiveness in the early detection of potential colon cancer cases.

These figures indicate that we are surpassing global standards in the early detection of colon cancer. For instance, out of every 100 patients, we have identified polyps in 50 individuals, with 27 of these being adenomas. This early detection means we can intervene sooner, providing our patients with the best possible chance for successful treatment and improved outcomes.

Total Knee Replacement (TKR)

TKR is a surgical procedure that involves replacing a damaged knee joint with an artificial joint, known as a prosthesis. This procedure is typically performed to alleviate knee pain associated with arthritis and maintain or improve knee function and quality of life.

By integrating data from Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) into our approach for TKR, we have seen significant improvements in service and efficiency. PROMs involve patients assessing their progress using internationally recognised questionnaires before and after surgery.

This has been achieved by refining specific processes, such as standardising pre-rehabilitation programs in our care protocols, which aim to enhance joint movement to facilitate better post-surgery recovery.

Pre-Rehabilitation Programs:

There has been a 42% increase in referrals to pre-rehabilitation programs.

Post-Surgery Functional Improvement:

As a result, 87% of patients have reported functional improvements as early as 3 months after their TKR.

These results demonstrate the tangible benefits of our patient-centred approach in optimising outcomes for Total Knee Replacement procedures.
